About Buddha Vairocana

In Tibetan and Nepalese Buddhism, Vairocana Buddha is regarded as one of the Five Dhyani Buddhas and represents the cosmic element of Rupa (form). He is considered a primordial celestial Buddha and is the central figure in the Five Tathagatas of Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhism. Vairocana is often interpreted in texts such as the Avatamsaka Sutra as the dharmakaya (the truth body) of the historical Gautama Buddha.

Vairocana Buddha is depicted with two hands held at the chest, with the tips of the thumbs and forefingers of each hand united in the Dharmachakra Mudra. This mudra, symbolizing the gesture of teaching, represents the turning of the Wheel of Dharma (the teachings of the Buddha). It is said to be the same gesture Buddha exhibited when delivering his first sermon at Sarnath.

In East Asian Buddhism, Vairocana is seen as the embodiment of the concept of sunyata (emptiness). In Mahayana and Vajrayana traditions, he is considered the central figure, radiating wisdom and compassion throughout the universe. Vairocana’s position as the Primordial Buddha makes him an important figure in the Tibetan Buddhist practice, embodying the essence of the enlightened mind.
