About Simhamukha
Simhamukha is a female meditational deity with the fierce face of a lion. She is one of the wisdom dakinis in Tibetan Buddhism, originating from the Chakrasamvara Tantra cycle. In the Sarma traditions—Sakya, Kagyu, and Gelug—Simhamukha is associated with the Anuttarayoga tantra, symbolizing the wisdom of transformative awareness. While she shares a name with the deity in the Nyingma tradition, the two representations differ. In the Nyingma "Treasure" tradition, Simhamukha is regarded as one of the secret manifestations of Guru Rinpoche, Padmasambhava, embodying fierce wisdom and spiritual power.
Simhamukha’s appearance reflects her fearsome and protective nature. With her blue-black body and a lion's face, she embodies strength and the fierce compassion of the awakened mind. The three glaring red eyes symbolize insight and heightened awareness, while her bared fangs and curled tongue represent the cutting away of ignorance. In her right hand, she holds a curved-knife, marked with a vajra, symbolizing the cutting of attachment, while her left hand holds a blood-filled skullcup to the heart, representing the transformation of negative emotions into wisdom.
The five dry human heads in her crown symbolize the five wisdoms, and the fifty wet, blood-dripping heads as a necklace represent the liberation of all beings. Adorned with bone ornaments and a tiger skin as a lower garment, Simhamukha stands in a blazing fire of pristine awareness, symbolizing the destruction of ego and the realization of ultimate wisdom.
