More about Shakyamuni Buddha Thangka Art
Shakyamuni Buddha, the historical Buddha, is considered the founder of Buddhist philosophy and is often referred to simply as "the Buddha." He is believed to have lived around 420 BC, spending much of his life spreading the teachings of Dharma. In Buddhism, each "kalpa" (a Buddhist eon) has its own Buddha whose teachings, over time, are forgotten before the next Buddha arrives. Shakyamuni’s life is richly detailed in the Thangka known as Life of Buddha, which portrays his journey to enlightenment.
For many, Shakyamuni Buddha serves as a model, guide, and inspiration. It is said that his presence on earth is sustained by the “dharma” (spiritual belief) and by the “sangha” (the Buddhist community). Together, these elements form the Three Jewels of Buddhism: Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
Key Features of Shakyamuni Buddha's Representation
Shakyamuni Buddha is traditionally painted in shades of gold or beige and depicted in monastic robes while seated atop a lotus throne. Symbolically, the lotus seat represents living in this world without being tainted by its imperfections. The sun and moon are placed on the lotus to symbolize prajna (wisdom) and upaya (compassionate means) respectively.
- Left Hand: Held in the dhyani or meditation mudra, representing inner peace and spiritual cultivation.
- Right Hand: Positioned in the Bhumisparsa mudra, which translates to "taking the earth as a witness." This mudra refers to an episode in the Buddha’s life when he called upon the earth to witness his enlightenment.
Shakyamuni is often shown accompanied by his two disciples: Sariputra, famed for his wisdom, and Maudgalyayana, known for his miraculous feats. Both were Brahmins before they became followers of the Buddha.
The Buddha is frequently depicted sitting on a throne supported by two lions, symbolizing his kingly status among the divine, akin to the lion’s role as the king of beasts. Sometimes, an extravagant backrest is included, which can feature six mystical creatures, referencing the six paramitas (or perfections) essential for attaining Buddhahood.
