About Marichi Thangka Art
Marichi is a female meditational deity belonging to the Kriya Tantra. Her name, meaning "ray of light," connects her to the sun, and she is often referred to as the Goddess of Dawn. Marichi is invoked by Tibetan Lamas around sunrise, symbolizing her connection to the rising sun. Just like the Hindu Sun-god, she rides a chariot, but hers is drawn by seven pigs, whereas the Sun-god's is drawn by seven horses. In China, Marichi is revered as the "Queen of Heaven".
Marichi is considered a protector, removing obstacles and bringing joy and prosperity. She is honored through rituals and prayers, particularly at dawn, when her mantra, Om Marichi Mum Swaha, is recited. This prayer helps practitioners visualize rays emerging from Marichi that purify all beings, bringing good qualities like compassion and wisdom. The rays also blind evil spirits, protecting practitioners and their loved ones. The ritual culminates in the wish that the merits gained lead all beings to enlightenment.
The cult of Marichi is popular in Tibet, Mongolia, and China, and there are many shrines dedicated to her in Tibet. In Japan, Marichi is believed to reside in one of the seven stars of the Great Bear constellation. In India, depictions of her have been found in various regions, showing her widespread influence.
In this Thangka, Marichi is depicted with three heads and eight arms. Each of her faces has a peaceful expression and three eyes. She wears a crown adorned with gemstones, and a lotus blooms from the crown of her front face. Her hair is partially tied up in a knot, with some falling over her shoulders. Her right hands hold a vajra, vajra axe, arrow, and are in the charity mudra with a needle, while her left hands hold an Ashoka tree branch, noose in tarjani mudra, and a thread. She is seated in lalitasana on a chariot drawn by seven pigs. Marichi is adorned with hoop earrings, necklaces with flower motifs, armlets, bracelets, anklets with gemstones, flowing silk scarves, and a dhoti.
