About Samantabhadra – The Primordial Lord of Unchanging Light

Samantabhadra, also known as Kun tu zang po in Tibetan, is a revered figure in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. He is considered the Buddha of Primordial Light, embodying the unchanging, timeless nature of enlightenment. Samantabhadra’s origins lie in the early Nyingma Tantric texts, particularly the Guhyagarbha Tantra.

Samantabhadra is traditionally depicted as a blue-black Buddha, often naked and in a meditation posture with legs in a vajra stance. In his most common representation, he embraces his consort, Samantabhadri, who is light-skinned and also depicted naked. This imagery symbolizes the inseparable unity of wisdom and compassion, the male and female aspects of enlightenment. In some traditions, Samantabhadra and Samantabhadri are shown with clothing and jewelry.

There is also a variant depiction of Samantabhadra as part of the Five Buddhas of the Guhyagarbha Tantra, where his appearance and color can vary slightly, but his profound nature remains constant.

It is important to note that Samantabhadra the Buddha is different from Samantabhadra the Bodhisattva, the latter being a figure from Mahayana Sutra literature.
