About Two Arm Mahakala (Bernakchen)
Mahakala is a wrathful deity associated with protection, and Bernakchen is the two-armed form of Mahakala. He is the main protector of the Karmapas, the head of the Karma Kagyu school. Often seen as a fierce figure, Mahakala’s wrathful nature is symbolic of the cutting through of negative patterns such as aggression, hatred, and ignorance.
Mahakala is depicted with a stout body and strong limbs, crowned with skulls, his flaming hair rising from his forehead. He stands within a circle of flames, signifying the burning away of delusions and ignorance. His face is marked by an angry expression, with protruding fangs and bloodshot eyes. A third eye often appears in the middle of his forehead, representing his all-seeing vision.

Preparing the Cotton canvas before starting to paint a Thangka. This process includes washing, drying, stretching, sizing and everything needed to make a perfect base for the thangka to last for centuries.
Thangka paintings are painted using natural minerals such as agate, gold, silver, cinnabar, saffron, ocher, rhubarb,lapis and many other minerals. To create the ideal pigment for painting, these materials are ground several times. This makes the materials even more durable and long-lasting. Thus, you can surely expect the color of the Thangka to withstand the test of time.
The gold in the ornaments and detailing is made from real gold dust.
