Kalachakra Mandala Meaning

Kalachakra is a Sanskrit word made up of two terms; Kala meaning “Time” and chakra meaning “Cycle”, literally translated into English as “Cycle of Time”. But what does that actually mean? 

Kalachara Mandala means: Everything in nature happens in Cycle of Time.

• Outer Kalachakra: the external environment, the universe and its cycles of arising and disintegrating.
• Inner Kalachakra: the sentient beings living in the universe, and the cycles of death and birth and internal flows of breath and energy;
• Alternative Kalachakra: The practice of purification undertaken by an individual so that ordinary death, birth, and manifestation on both an individual and universal level, which are usually uncontrollably subject to the passage of time, become purified into the fully Enlightened state of complete Buddhahood.

Kalachakra Mandala Art Explained

Kalachakra Mandala is always in a round or circular form. The center contains Nirvana with a lotus flower. To reach the Nirvana we have to cross 6 phases. They are:

1. Earth
2. Water
3. Fire
4. Wind
5. Space
6. Wisdom

After crossing 6 layers from outside - we reach nice spiritual monastery. And we have major 3 entrances from 4 dimensions. The 3 entrances are Body Entrance, Speech Entrance and Mind Entrance. It is believed that we reach the Nirvana does not need to rebirth or re-incarnation. 

In case of Meditation, we use Niravana as a means for peace. We focus on the lotus at the center then we can visualize the 3D design of monastery. Just image Kalachakra Mandala as the view of Monastery from Airplane or top.
