Manjushri, the Bodhisattva of transcendent wisdom, is a central figure in Mahayana Buddhism. He, along with Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani, protects the Tathagata family, which includes Buddha Shakyamuni and Buddha Vairochana. According to legend, Manjushri came to Nepal on a pilgrimage from China when the Kathmandu Valley was a large lake. Upon seeing a strong light emanating from a lotus flower in the center of the lake, he used his flaming sword to drain the lake, allowing people to settle there. The Swayambhunath Stupa was later built where the lotus flower had landed.
Key Symbolism:
- Transcendent Wisdom: Manjushri represents the wisdom that transcends ignorance, with his sword symbolizing the destruction of ignorance and its transformation into wisdom.
- Transformation: The flaming sword is a symbol of the transformative power of wisdom and fire.
- Prajnaparamita Sutra: The lotus in his left hand holds the Prajnaparamita sutra, symbolizing the realization and perfection of wisdom.
This beautifully crafted statue of Manjushri is a symbol of wisdom, transformation, and spiritual enlightenment, making it a meaningful addition to any collection.
