About Nyingma Dudjom Tersar Refuge Tree
This Refuge Tree Thangka depicts the vast assembly of gurus and deities of the Dudjom Tersar tradition, a Nyingma terma or "hidden treasure" transmission famously taught by the late Dudjom Rinpoche (1904-1987). The Refuge Tree rises from Lake Danakosha, the birthplace of Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the great tantric master of the 8th century who introduced Vajrayana Buddhism to Tibet.
At the heart of the Refuge Tree is Padmasambhava, seated upon a moon disc, lotus, and lion-throne, surrounded by an arc of lotuses and rainbow light. Behind him are the stacked and silk-covered texts of the Buddhadharma, enveloped in rainbow light. Above Padmasambhava, in the upper center, are Samantabhadra and his consort, along with Vajrasattva and Garab Dorje, representing the three divine bodies (kayas) of an enlightened Buddha.
Descending beneath this trinity are the seven lineage gurus, with Dudjom Rinpoche appearing directly above Padmasambhava's head. Flanking the upper corners are eight gods offering various blessings, while to Padmasambhava's right sits an assembly of twenty-four Buddhas, with Shakyamuni at the center, representing the thousand and two Buddhas of our era. On his left, the assembly of eight Bodhisattvas and sixteen Arhats are positioned in another rainbow circle.
Beneath Padmasambhava, the eight wrathful Heruka deities of the Mahayoga Tantra traditions are depicted, along with the white Vidyadhara Heruka in yab-yum with his consort. Across the lower lotus base of the tree are thirteen of the primary protective deities of the Nyingma tradition. In the lower foreground, various auspicious offerings, deer, fishes, birds, and practitioners making prostrations surround the scene, with a monk presenting a mandala offering.
