About Kagyu Mahakala Bernagchen – The Black Cloak Protector
Bernagchen, also known as Vajra Mahakala, belongs to the class of Bhagavat Mahakala, originating from India and later integrated into the Karma Kagyu School by the 2nd Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1206-1283). His name, meaning "The Black Cloak Mahakala," signifies his role as a fierce Dharma protector, shielding practitioners from obstacles and guiding them on the path of enlightenment.
Depicted in a wrathful form, Bernagchen is black in color, with one face, three glaring eyes, and a wide, red mouth baring white fangs. His yellow beard, eyebrows, and upward-flowing hair resemble blazing flames. In his right hand, he wields a curved flaying knife with a vajra handle, while his left holds a blood-filled skull cup close to his heart. He is adorned with a crown of five skulls, earrings, bracelets, and a garland of freshly severed heads. The distinctive black cloak he wears symbolizes his powerful protective nature, and he stands surrounded by a swirling aura of black smoke and red flames of pristine awareness fire.
