About Mikyo Dorje
Mikyo Dorje, born in the fire-rabbit year in a family of devoted yogis in East Tibet, became the Eighth Gyalwa Karmapa at a young age. His birthplace, Sa-tam in the Gomchu-Gyalung region, was where he made a profound declaration at birth, saying, "I am the Karmapa." His words were taken seriously by his father, Ajam, who sought guidance from the Third Tai Situ Rinpoche. Upon learning of the child’s birth, Rinpoche recognized him as the reincarnation of the Seventh Gyalwa Karmapa.
At just five years old, Mikyo Dorje was challenged by another family from Amdo claiming their child was the Karmapa. The Second Gyaltsab Rinpoche and the Third Tai Situpa traveled to meet Mikyo Dorje, and upon seeing him, they immediately recognized him as the true Karmapa. Mikyo Dorje passed all tests with his strong and confident assertion: “Emaho! How wonderful! Have no doubts. I am the Karmapa.” His wisdom and clarity led to his recognition as the Eighth Karmapa, and the title was confirmed through the guidance of important Tibetan figures and the blessing of his spiritual teachers.
After being enthroned at Tsurphu Gon in the Tolung Valley, Mikyo Dorje received essential teachings and empowerments from His Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche and the First Sangye Nyenpa, Tashi Paljor. The wisdom imparted by his Root Guru shaped his journey, preparing him to carry forward the lineage and teachings of the Karmapa tradition. Throughout his life, Mikyo Dorje was known for his deep spiritual realization, scholarly brilliance, and compassionate leadership in the Karma Kagyu school.
