About Tapihritsa – The Bon Yogi of the Rainbow Body

Tapihritsa, a revered figure in the Bon tradition, was a practitioner who achieved the ultimate spiritual realization of the rainbow body, becoming a trikaya Buddha. Born to a nomadic family in the country of Zhang Zhung, Tapihritsa’s journey to enlightenment was guided by his main teacher, Dawa Gyaltsen. After nine years of intense spiritual practice in a holy place outside Mount Kailash, Tapihritsa attained the extraordinary state of the rainbow body, a sign of the highest Dzogchen realization.

Tapihritsa’s story is intertwined with that of Nangzher Lopo, a renowned master in Zhang Zhung. Despite having previously received teachings from Nangzher Lopo, Tapihritsa’s path was shaped by the realization that his master’s pride had obstructed his full enlightenment. The legend tells of Tapihritsa manifesting as a young boy to engage in a profound debate on meditation with Nangzher Lopo. The master, initially irritated, was stunned by the boy’s wisdom and presence. As he looked upon the young Tapihritsa seated cross-legged in mid-air, surrounded by a rainbow, Nangzher Lopo recognized the extraordinary nature of his student, a moment of deep spiritual realization.
